Workplace Accident Investigation Services

To address workplace accidents, it’s vital to investigate what happened, the causes and ways it can be avoided moving forward. There may have been certain weaknesses with your health and safety procedure that this accident has highlighted, which you need to address promptly and professionally to avoid similar future accidents.

We help to investigate workplace incidents on your behalf, and recommend/implement health and safety changes to increase safety for yourself and your employees.

Is it a legal requirement to investigate accidents at work?

There is not one single legislation which specifically states a need to investigate accidents, but there are many regulations which strongly imply that you do need to. So to avoid risking legal action, it’s best to do so.

One such regulation is the ‘Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999,’ which states that employers must ‘control, review and monitor the preventative and protective measures.’ Risk assessments following accidents are regarded as part of this review process.

Our Workplace Accident Investigation Services

Following an accident, you may feel it is your responsibility to discover what caused a certain risk, and how to prevent it. Our workplace accident investigation services involve us coming to your premises as a neutral third party and meeting with you to understand what accident has taken place, the severity of it, and who it has affected.

We’ll then undertake:

  • The thorough process of evidence collection
  • Situation analysis and;
  • Incident reporting

… resulting in valuable insights as to how you can improve your workplace safety standards.

We also offer a health and safety competent person service for whether, moving forward, you want us to take care of this responsibility for you too.

What does an accident investigation service involve?

We make it our responsibility to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, find potential gaps in your health and safety process which may have played into this, as well as identifying other risks which could cause future problems.

A primary aspect of our investigation service involves collecting evidence around the incident (more on that later).

Once we’ve collected evidence, we’ll verify that you were adhering to all safety regulations already, and then start planning and proposing changes which you can make to your workplace, or the regulations you have in place, with the goal of increasing overall safety and minimising the risk of any similar future incidents.

If you’re happy with these changes, we’re also able to help you implement them, whether it’s by taking you through potential personnel changes/additions or altering the layout of your workplace.

What types of evidence is collected in a workplace accident investigation?

During a workplace accident investigation, there are a few different evidence types we look to collect:

  • Equipment, tools, substances - We’ll look at any types of equipment which may have been involved, including how and where they are stored, and the condition of them.
  • Photographs - We’ll preserve photographs of the scene to ensure we can spot everything which might’ve contributed.
  • Witness statements - Assuming there were other people present, we’ll ask them to recall the events as they remember them.
  • Digital evidence - CCTV, computer logs or data, any other digital evidence which we can access.

Preparing an accident investigation report

We’ll prepare a full and thorough accident investigation report which contains recommendations regarding safety and the prevention of future incidents. Our aim is for this report to take into account the context of the accident and your workplace, and to provide solutions which are reasonable and achievable.

Based on this report, we can also help with the implementation of changes for you.
